Independent outlook combines with family values

Carryduff Building Supplies first opened its doors in 1984 under its former name, Farm Feeds and Supplies. Founder John Gilliland – a dairy farmer at the time – and his wife Shirley began by selling agricultural supplies to local farmers, which then gradually expanded to include building materials and supplies.

As the building supplies side of things took off, John gave up farming to focus on growing the business and in 1997, the name of the company was changed to Carryduff Building Supplies to reflect the true nature of what the business had become.

However, the ethos behind this family-run business remained the same; to deliver a personal, friendly and accommodating service while pressing forward to grow the business in areas that would provide extra value to its wide ranging client base; such as adding a ready mix concrete facility and a concrete pre-cast production facility.

Being an independent builders’ merchant has allowed the business to grow organically into areas in which the family firm identified a need.

John and Shirley are now joined in the business by two of their sons, Andrew and Richard. This family team is a hands-on operation, in day-to-day contact with clients and personally looking after their orders and accounts.

They are proud to uphold the business motto, “Small enough to care, large enough to cope,” and take great satisfaction at providing a ‘one-stop-shop’ service for customers.

“We are a bit different from your standard builders merchants,” said Andrew Gilliland, “As manufacturers of precast concrete products and ready-mix concrete as well as traditional building supplies, we can provide everything you need to build a house, from the stones at the very beginning stages for the foundations, to the finishing touches like landscaping and gardening supplies.”
