Founder and Director Leo Matheson is a joiner by trade, having initially started his career working for a small local joinery firm, where he developed his skills.
A keen eye for detail and passion for delivering high-quality workmanship set him apart from others in the industry. After gaining years of experience in his trade, Leo decided to take a leap into self-employment and, in 1985, Castlewellan-based Leo Matheson Limited was formed.
Leo began by working on smaller residential projects, building a solid reputation for craftsmanship and reliability. His reputation spread quickly due to word-of-mouth recommendations, and he began to attract higher-profile projects, such as bespoke grand design homes and listed buildings.
His attention to detail and knowledge of historical restoration has led to his company being appointed as principal contractor for multiple high-profile church renovation projects.
As his business grew, Leo expanded his workforce and hired skilled craftsmen to help with larger projects. He also began building relationships with architects, interior designers and developers, helping him secure increasingly complex and high-budget projects.
Recognising the demand for affordable, well-constructed housing, Leo strategically pivoted into social housing construction. He focused on building sustainable and quality designs, ensuring that his work aligned with both modern standards and community needs. His ability to balance precision and efficiency has allowed him to manage large-scale projects while maintaining high-quality results.
Today, his business is thriving with a diverse portfolio that includes church restorations, bespoke homes, commercial projects, healthcare, education projects and social housing developments.
Working within the private and public sectors, he credits much of his success to his dedicated and hardworking workforce. “I have men who joined my company as apprentices when I started out and have progressed to foremen today,” he said.
